The NHL won't be participating in the Winter Olympics, but several former Chicago Blackhawks will be suiting up for their country.

No current NCAA players were selected, though according to reports, Massachusetts' Cale Makar was offered a spot and declined.

Derek Roy played 738 NHL games for Buffalo, Dallas, Vancouver, St. Louis, Nashville and Edmonton with 189 goals and 335 assists.

"You don't want to go out there not having that pressure behind you", Wakefield said. By comparison, the United States team named last week has only 15 former NHL Players on its roster.

It's been quite a week for the Howden family. He was on the world championship teams in 2010 and 2014. "We saw them play, we had numerous events, and every one of them represented our jersey like we expect Canadians to do".

Hockey Canada certainly has done its part to groom players for the world's biggest stage.

Team USA selected goaltender Ryan Zapolski, who plays in the Kontinental Hockey League, during its initial announcement.

And Canada's team has been picked for the Olympics. He also played with the Rockford IceHogs for four seasons.

They aren't NHLers - those pros aren't attending the Olympics this year. "They're not going to get a chance to continue their NHL career or even start it in some way".

The list is highlighted by three key players.

The team will be coached by former Vancouver Canucks head coach Willie Desjardins who is from Climax with one of his assistants being Saskatoon's Dave King.

Earlier this month, the U.S. team was unveiled with 17-year NHL veteran Brian Gionta appointed captain.

The 12-nation tournament begins Feb. 14.
